Observed annually on October 11, the International Day of the Girl Child is a time to focus on the unique challenges girls face around the world and work together to empower them. This year’s theme is  “Our time is now- our rights.” Girls who experience violence are more likely to experience other forms of violence and abuse throughout their lives, which can have a devastating impact on their health, education, and future prospects. It is crucial that we work to prevent violence against girls and provide them with the support they need to thrive.

1. What is the International Day of the Girl Child?

The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated annually on 11th October and was initiated by the United Nations in 2012. The aim of this is to highlight and address the needs and challenges which girls face throughout the globe. The goal is to help girls find training and education so they can become successful women.

Called “Day of Girls”, the event helps empower girls and support them in fulfilling their human rights. The issues tend to be focused on education, equality, child marriage, access to specialist health services, and issues with gender-based violence. Each year has its own unique theme which determines a year-long campaign. “Previous themes have been “EmPower Girls: Before, During and After Crisis” (2017) and “Girls Progress = Goals Progress: What Counts For Girls” (2016).”

2. History of the International Day of the Girl Child:

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, issued in 1995, called for girls’ rights and started a much-needed wave of international support for young girls. Working towards equality and guaranteeing better options for girls all around the world is one of the most progressive acts.

The United Nations General Assembly declared the 11th of October to be the International Day of the Girl Child as a continuation for this. The UN has been working towards the goal of recognising the challenges and difficulties young girls are facing since December 2012.

3. How to get involved in International Day of the Girl Child 2022:

You can participate in International Day of the Girl Child 2022 from the comfort of your own home! Many digital activism campaigns led by young people support the International Day of the Girl Child by amplifying the voices of young girls and sharing their stories.

Invite guest speakers to your school, screen films related to the topic, or have your pupils do their research and find a figure they think is worthy of introducing to the others. You can also start discussions on girls’ rights and look for informative videos online to show the children to better understand the challenges others are facing in the world.

4. Significance of International Day of the Girl Child:

The goal of National Girl Child Day is to bring attention to the rights girls have and to give them the same opportunities as everyone else, as well as to support young girls in the nation and eliminate gender-based prejudices.
