International Students’ Day: A Day to Celebrate Diversity and Culture

November 17th is International Students’ Day. A day to celebrate the diversity and culture of international students. This day is important because it helps to build a sense of community among international students and raise awareness of the contributions they make to society. 1. What is the history of International Students’ Day?

The Nazi occupants in Czechoslovakia, at that time called the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, suppressed a demonstration held by students of the Medical Faculty of the Charles University in Prague in late 1939.

The demonstration was held to commemorate the creation of an independent Czech Republic. Jan Opletal’s death resulted from this demonstration.

He was supposed to be transported from Prague back to his home in Moravia on November 15th. This event was turned into yet another anti-Nazi demonstration by the thousands of students in his funeral procession.

However, this resulted in drastic measures being taken by the Nazis. More than 1200 students and nine professors were executed without trial on the 17th of November, closing down all Czech higher education institutions. 17th November was chosen as International Students’ Day.

2. How is International Students’ Day celebrated?

Every year on November 17th, people around the world celebrate International Students’ Day. This day is set aside to honor the contributions that international students make to their colleges and universities, as well as to the global community.
