J.P. Nadda Opens AIIMS Best Practices Conclave

In a significant initiative aimed at enhancing patient care, fostering innovation, and encouraging academic excellence, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, virtually addressed the inaugural edition of the Conclave on “Best Practices” organized by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur. The two-day event brought together leading institutions and stakeholders under one roof to share transformative practices being adopted across AIIMS centers nationwide.

The conclave, hosted by AIIMS Nagpur, seeks to highlight and disseminate effective strategies and operational models that have improved service delivery, strengthened institutional governance, and enhanced teaching and research within the AIIMS ecosystem. The event witnessed active participation from AIIMS institutions based in Bhopal, Jammu, Bilaspur, Jodhpur, Deoghar, Patna, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, and Raipur. Key collaborators such as the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) division of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Defence also joined, showcasing a unified commitment to advancing integrated healthcare across the nation.

Union Health Secretary Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava opened the event, underscoring the need for collective learning and institutional vision. She emphasized that universal health coverage and medical excellence remain key goals of the Government of India, and that leadership and inter-institutional collaboration are vital for sustainable growth.

In his keynote address, Shri J.P. Nadda hailed AIIMS as Institutes of National Importance, stating, “Each AIIMS is not just a healthcare provider but a symbol of India’s commitment to building equitable, affordable, and evidence-based healthcare. Strategically located across the nation, AIIMS institutions are central to reducing regional healthcare disparities and raising standards of treatment, research, and education.”

Shri Nadda described the conclave as a “pioneering initiative” that unites all AIIMS under a shared mission of quality improvement in three core domains—teaching-learning and research, hospital services, and governance with patient convenience. He applauded AIIMS Nagpur for taking the lead in convening the first edition and setting a precedent for future collaborative exchanges among institutions.

The Minister also elaborated on how AIIMS has embraced Competency Based Medical Education (CBME), incorporated digital tools in teaching, and developed simulation-based laboratories, thereby preparing medical students to handle emerging public health challenges. Structured mentorship programs and interdisciplinary collaboration, he said, are key markers of the AIIMS commitment to educational innovation and research advancement.

Further highlighting the role of AIIMS in reshaping patient experiences, Shri Nadda noted the growing use of e-governance platforms, digital registration systems, Jan Aushadhi Kendras, and dedicated patient helpdesks as examples of how technology and compassion can be integrated in government hospitals to offer seamless, patient-centric care.

He also stressed the importance of regional research and clinical trials, stating that new AIIMS institutions are significantly contributing to India’s scientific landscape by focusing on locally relevant public health issues. “Ethical, translational, and interdisciplinary research is critical for solving tomorrow’s complex healthcare problems,” he added.

Union Health Secretary Ms. Punya Salila Srivastava, during her address, echoed the need for a shared vision and leadership to scale institutional excellence. She highlighted that the best practices discussed during the conclave can help set benchmarks, improve service standards, and encourage innovation across the healthcare system.

The event was also graced by Smt. Ankita Mishra Bundela, Joint Secretary (PMSSY), Dr. Prashant P. Joshi, Executive Director of AIIMS Nagpur, senior officers from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, officials from the Ministry of Defence, the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, and Executive Directors and senior administrators from multiple AIIMS campuses across the country.

As the conclave progresses, participants will engage in deep-dive sessions, panel discussions, and knowledge-sharing formats to identify scalable models and collaborative frameworks. The learnings from this event are expected to serve as a roadmap for the continual strengthening of India’s premier healthcare institutions, thereby reinforcing the nation’s broader goal of achieving excellence in public health systems.
