Actress and filmmaker Kangna Amardeep Ranaut hails from India and predominantly works in Hindi films. She has received several awards for her work in female-led films, including four National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. She has also been featured six times in Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list.
The Government of India renowned her with the Padma Shri, the country’s 4th-highest civilian award, in 2020. Ranaut took up modelling at the age of 16 for a brief period of time. She made her film debut in the 2006 thriller Gangster, for which she was awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, after being trained under theatre director Arvind Gaur.
She received praise for her emotionally traumatized characters in the dramas Woh Lamhe… (2006), Life in a… Metro (2007) and Fashion (2008). She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the last of these.
She appeared in the commercially successful films Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009) and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010). However, she was criticized for being typecast in neurotic roles. Though she received a well for her comic role in Tanu Weds Manu (2011), her career was not propelled forward by a series of brief, glamorous roles in films that failed.
