Kuwait Mourns: Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Sabah’s Passing at 86

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, passed away on Saturday following his hospitalization last month due to an emergency health issue. Even before assuming power in September 2020, Sheikh Nawaf had been known to be in fragile health, frequently seeking medical treatment abroad.

Despite his demise, Kuwait’s oil strategy is anticipated to remain unchanged, given its prominent role as one of the world’s leading crude exporters and a key member of OPEC, often aligning with Saudi Arabia’s leadership within the cartel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow, stating, “Deeply saddened to learn about the unfortunate demise of His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. We convey our deepest condolences to the Royal family, the leadership, and the people of Kuwait.”

By the constitution, Sheikh Nawaf’s half-brother, Crown Prince Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, is set to succeed him. Crown Prince Sheikh Mishaal has already been overseeing the majority of the day-to-day affairs of the state.
