In a significant move towards promoting farmers’ development and ensuring their economic security, the Indian government has announced a substantial increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat, a staple crop of the nation. This increase is part of the ongoing efforts to provide better remuneration to farmers and strengthen the agricultural sector, which forms the backbone of India’s economy. The MSP of wheat has been raised by 62.50%, reaching Rs 2275 per quintal for the Marketing Season (RMS) 2024-25, compared to Rs 1400 per quintal in RMS 2014-15.
The Backbone of India’s Agriculture: Wheat
Wheat, often referred to as the “staple food of India,” holds a significant place in the country’s agricultural landscape. It is a crucial crop that not only contributes significantly to the nation’s food security but also plays a pivotal role in sustaining the livelihoods of millions of Indian farmers. With such a fundamental position in India’s agriculture, ensuring the well-being and economic security of wheat farmers becomes paramount.

The Minimum Support Price (MSP) is a government-announced price at which it procures crops from farmers. This support price acts as a safety net for farmers, assuring them of a fair income for their produce, even in challenging market conditions. MSPs are declared for various crops to offer price stability, protect farmers from market fluctuations, and promote agricultural sustainability.
Significant MSP Hike for Wheat: RMS 2024-25
The increase in the MSP for wheat from Rs 1400 per quintal in RMS 2014-15 to Rs 2275 per quintal in RMS 2024-25 reflects the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare and development. This substantial hike is designed to provide better returns to wheat growers and encourage them to continue their dedicated efforts in cultivating this vital crop.
A Stepping Stone for Economic Security
The increased MSP for wheat will not only empower farmers but also enhance their economic security. It ensures that wheat farmers receive fair compensation for their hard work and investment.
