Known Mononymously as Mohanlal, Mohanlal Viswanathan is an Indian actor, film producer, playback singer, film distributor, and director who predominantly works in Malayalam cinema besides also having sporadically appeared in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada-language films. During Mohanlal’s prolific career spanning over four decades, he has acted in more than 400 films.
Mohanlal’s contemporaries in the Indian film industry have praised his contributions to Malayalam cinema. The Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2001, and Padma Bhushan in 2019, India’s fourth and third highest civilian honours, for his contributions to Indian cinema. He became the first actor in India to be awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army in 2009.
Early life:
Mohanlal Viswanathan was born on 21 May 1960 in the village of Elanthoor in the Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Santhakumari is the mother of He, the youngest child, who is also the son of Viswanathan Nair, a former bureaucrat and Law Secretary with the Kerala government. He had an elder brother named Pyarelal who died in 2000 during a military exercise. Mohanlal was named Roshanlal by his maternal uncle Gopinathan Nair, but he later chose to change his name to “Mohanlal”.
His father was adamant that he should not take on their caste name (Nair) as a surname, something that all of them had. Mohanlal grew up at his paternal home in Thiruvananthapuram, in Mudavanmugal. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram after studying at Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram. Mohanlal’s first stage role was that of a ninety-year-old man when he was cast as a sixth grader in a play called Computer Boy.
Personal Life:
On April 28, 1988, Mohanlal married Suchitra, daughter of Tamil film producer K. Balaji. Pranav Mohanlal and Vismaya Mohanlal are the two children of the couple. Pranav made his debut in Mohanlal’s Onnaman in 2001 and has since appeared in a few films. Mohanlal didn’t object when his son expressed a desire to act, because he knows “kids may have many such ambitions.”
