Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) Witnesses Impressive Traffic in First 10 Days

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Mumbai’s Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), inaugurated on January 12th, has quickly become a bustling thoroughfare, witnessing an impressive influx of vehicles. In just 10 days, an average of almost 30,000 vehicles traversed the 21.8 km bridge, contributing to a daily toll revenue of Rs 61.50 lakh.

Providing a snapshot of the MTHL’s popularity, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) reported that 28,176 vehicles used the bridge on the inaugural day, generating Rs 54.77 lakh in toll revenue. The following day saw an even more substantial surge, with 54,977 vehicles crossing over and contributing Rs 1.06 crore.

The toll rates for the MTHL vary based on the destination. For the Sewri to Chirle stretch, it costs Rs 250 for a one-way trip, Rs 300 for a return journey, Rs 500 for a daily pass, and Rs 10,000 for a monthly pass. Other routes, such as Sewri to Shivaji Nagar (Ulwe) and Shivaji Nagar-Gavhan, also have specific toll charges.

“Beyond the economic impact, the MTHL serves as a crucial link in Mumbai’s transportation network, promising a faster commute between Sewri and Chirle. However, commuters are reminded to adhere to the speed limits of 100 kmph on the bridge and a cautious 40 kmph on the ramps”.

Traffic management is a joint effort, with the Mumbai police overseeing the initial 10.4 km stretch from Sewri, and the Navi Mumbai police taking charge of the remaining span of the bridge. As Mumbaiites embrace this new connectivity, the MTHL stands out as both an engineering marvel and a pivotal asset for the city’s transportation landscape.
