The Indian music fraternity is mourning the loss of Ustad Rashid Khan, a colossal figure in Hindustani classical music. Renowned for his soul-stirring rendition of “Aaoge Jab Tum” from the Bollywood hit “Jab We Met,” the maestro succumbed to prostate cancer at 55 in Kolkata. A Stalwart of the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana:
Born on July 1, 1968, Rashid Khan was a beacon of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, upholding a rich legacy passed down from his great-grandfather and gharana founder, Inayat Hussain Khan. His deep connection to his roots was evident in every performance, blending tradition with his unique improvisations.
Career Highlights:
Rashid Khan’s journey in music began early, with his first concert at just eleven years old. By 1978, he was already performing at major events, and his move to the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in 1980 marked a pivotal moment in his career. His formal recognition as a musician in 1994 was a testament to his dedication and talent.

Rashid Khan’s contribution to Indian music didn’t go unnoticed. He was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri in 2006 and later, the Padma Bhushan in 2022, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to the arts.
