Better known as Nana Patekar, Vishwanath Patekar is an Indian actor, screenwriter, filmmaker, and former Indian Territorial Army officer, mainly working in Hindi and Marathi cinema. One of the finest actors in Indian Cinema, he is regarded highly. Patekar has won three National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards for his acting performance. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema and arts.
Patekar made his acting debut in Bollywood with the 1978 drama Gaman, after which he acted in a few Marathi films and some Bollywood films. He won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Parinda (1989), followed by another negative role in Angaar (1992), after acting in the Academy Award-nominated Salaam Bombay in 1988.
Early life:
On 1 January 1951, Nana Patekar was born as Vishwanath Patekar in a Marathi family in Murud-Janjira of present-day Raigad District, Maharashtra. He attended the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai.
Personal life:
Patekar married Neelkanti when he was 27. Nana’s father died of a heart attack when Nana was 28 and later Patekar also lost his first son. Patekar was a chain smoker until he finally quit at the age of 56.
He said in an interview that his father loved plays and encouraged him to watch them. He developed his love for acting through this method. Directing his first play, Vijaya Mehta made his debut. Patekar lives in a 1BHK apartment in Andheri, Mumbai.
