I. What Is Cancer?

One of the leading causes of death around the world is cancer. The disease is characterized by the abnormal growth of cells, which can invade and damage surrounding tissues. Though cancer can affect any part of the body, it is most commonly found in the lungs, breasts, prostate, and colon. While the cause of cancer is not fully understood, risk factors include lifestyle choices like smoking and diet, as well as exposure to radiation and certain chemicals.

Cancer is not one disease, but rather a group of diseases with similar characteristics. Different types of cancer have their own set of symptoms and treatment options. Treatment for cancer typically involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. While there is no cure for cancer, with early diagnosis and treatment, many people are able to live long and healthy lives.

2 . What Causes Cancer?

Cancer is caused by uncontrolled cell growth and tumor formation, which is led by genetic changes. The main reason for sporadic (non-familial) cancers is DNA damage and genomic instability. Inherited genetic mutations are responsible for a minority of cancers.

Cancers are mostly related to environmental, lifestyle, or behavioral exposures. Cancer is not usually passed from person to person, but it can be caused by oncoviruses and cancer bacteria. Cancer researchers use the term “environmental” to refer to everything outside the body that interacts with humans. ( air, water, land)
