Navy Inserts Team to Save Fire-Hit MV WAN Hai 503

In a significant development in the ongoing salvage operations of the container ship MV WAN Hai 503, which has been battling a massive fire, the Indian Navy demonstrated exemplary agility and operational readiness by conducting a daring aerial insertion of a salvage team on 13 June 2025.

The operation was launched in response to the escalating emergency aboard the vessel, which required immediate intervention to prevent further damage and assist in towing efforts. The salvage team was swiftly mobilized from INS Garuda, Kochi, and embarked onboard a Naval Seaking helicopter. Despite challenging weather and sea conditions, and the active fire onboard the ship, the Indian Navy executed a flawless insertion of the team onto the burning vessel.

Once winched down onto MV WAN Hai 503, the salvage crew proceeded to connect the towline with the salvage tug Offshore Warrior, a crucial step in stabilizing and moving the distressed vessel. Following the successful tow connection, the team was efficiently extracted from the vessel by the same helicopter, completing the high-risk mission without any casualties.

This operation has allowed the towing of the vessel to officially commence, marking a key turning point in the response effort.

Currently, INS Sharda and the offshore support vessel MV Triton Liberty remain engaged in the mission, working in coordination with the Indian Coast Guard and other maritime agencies. Their joint objective is to bring the situation under control, ensure maritime safety, and mitigate environmental impact.

The Indian Navy’s prompt and well-coordinated aerial insertion and extraction of the salvage team have greatly strengthened the ongoing rescue and recovery mission. This operation showcases the Navy’s advanced capabilities and steadfast dedication to ensuring maritime safety and responding effectively to emergencies at sea.

As the salvage operations continue, the collective effort of naval forces, salvage experts, and maritime agencies stands as a powerful testament to India’s readiness in addressing complex maritime emergencies.
