Happy Birthday Dr. S. Jaishankar: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari extends heartfelt birthday greetings to Dr. S. Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs of the Government of India. Dr. Jaishankar, born on January 9, 1955, is a prominent member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has been serving in his current role since May 30, 2019.
A distinguished diplomat and politician, Dr. S. Jaishankar’s career is marked by significant achievements. He served as the Foreign Secretary from January 2015 to January 2018, becoming the second diplomat ever to be appointed as India’s External Affairs Minister, following Natwar Singh.
Dr. S. Jaishankar joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 1977 and held various crucial positions during his diplomatic career of over 38 years. Notable among them were his roles as High Commissioner to Singapore (2007–2009) and Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2001–2004), China (2009–2013), and the US (2014–2015). His key contributions include playing a pivotal role in negotiating the Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement.
Post-retirement, Dr. Jaishankar assumed the position of President, Global Corporate Affairs at Tata Sons. In recognition of his exemplary service, he was honored with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2019.
“Sworn in as a cabinet minister in the second Modi ministry on May 30, 2019, Dr. S. Jaishankar became the Minister of External Affairs the next day. He holds the distinction of being the first former Foreign Secretary to head the Ministry of External Affairs as a Cabinet Minister”.
Dr. S. Jaishankar is known for his linguistic prowess, being fluent in English, Tamil, and Hindi. He also possesses conversational skills in Russian, Japanese, and Chinese. On this special day, Nitin Gadkari’s birthday wishes add to the celebration of the achievements and contributions of this versatile and accomplished statesman.
