Celebrated annually on January 15th, Army Day holds significant historical importance, marking Lieutenant General Kodandera M. Cariappa’s assumption of command as the first Indian Army Commander-in-Chief in 1949. This transition symbolized India’s emergence from British colonial influence.
The day is commemorated through parades and military displays across the country, with the central event taking place at the Cariappa Parade ground in Delhi cantonment. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by valiant soldiers who dedicated their lives to safeguarding the nation and its citizens.
“While the celebrations honor the gallantry and resilience of the armed forces, Army Day also recognizes the recipients of prestigious awards like the Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra. The parade features military hardware, contingents, and combat displays, showcasing the strength and preparedness of the Indian Army”.
In 2020, Captain Tania Shergill made history by becoming the first female officer to command an Army Day parade, exemplifying the growing role of women in the armed forces.
