Nitin Gadkari Extends Pongal and Bhogi Bihu Greetings

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Nitin Gadkari, extending warm wishes, conveys heartfelt greetings on the auspicious occasions of Pongal and Bhogi Bihu. His words resonate with a wish for abundant joy, prosperity, and the warmth of togetherness during these significant festivities.

Pongal, also known as Thai Pongal, stands as a multi-day Hindu harvest festival predominantly celebrated by Tamils. Falling in the month of Thai as per the Tamil solar calendar, typically on 14 or 15 January, it is dedicated to Surya, the Sun God. This celebration aligns with Makar Sankranti, echoing the spirit of harvest festivities observed across India under various regional names.

The festival spans three or four days, marked by Bhogi, Surya Pongal, Maatu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal, each observed on consecutive days. Bhogi initiates the celebrations, followed by gratitude to the Sun God, festivities honoring cattle, and concluding with a day dedicated to family and community bonding.

In his wishes, Gadkari also extends greetings for Bhogi Bihu, a set of three cultural festivals unique to Assam – Rongali (Bohag Bihu) in April, Kongali (Kati Bihu) in October or November, and Bhogali (Magh Bihu) in January. The festivals weave together Tibeto-Barman, Austroasiatic, and Indo-Aryan traditions, embodying the rich cultural tapestry of Assam.

“Rongali Bihu, the most significant of the three, celebrates the arrival of spring with vibrant festivities. Bhogali Bihu, also known as Magh Bihu, is a harvest festival marked by community feasts, expressing gratitude for the abundance yielded by the land. Kongali Bihu, or Kati Bihu, takes on a somber tone, reflecting a season of short supplies and embracing animistic traditions”.

As Gadkari shares his heartfelt wishes, he encapsulates the essence of these diverse festivals, each carrying its unique cultural significance. His words echo the spirit of unity, gratitude, and celebration that permeates Pongal and Bhogi Bihu, fostering a sense of joy and togetherness among communities celebrating these auspicious occasions.
