Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, took to social media to pay tribute to Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa on his birth anniversary. Acknowledging the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Gadkari expressed reverence for Field Marshal Cariappa’s pivotal role in India’s military history.

A Legendary Military Career

Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa, born on 28 January 1899, was not just a military officer but a diplomat who left an indelible mark on India’s defense forces. Serving as the Indian Commander-in-Chief during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, he demonstrated exceptional leadership on the Western Front. In 1949, he assumed the prestigious role of Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, earning the rare distinction of being one of only two Indian Army officers to hold the five-star rank of Field Marshal, the other being Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.

From Madikeri to the Pinnacle of Military Leadership

Cariappa’s illustrious military career spanned nearly three decades. Hailing from Madikeri, Kodagu, he joined the British Indian Army after World War I and quickly rose through the ranks. Notably, he became the first Indian officer to attend the Staff College in Quetta, commanded a battalion, and underwent training at the Imperial Defence College in Camberley.

Before assuming the role of Commander-in-Chief, Cariappa held crucial positions, including commanding the Indian Army’s Eastern and Western Commands. His strategic acumen and dedication to service have etched his name in the annals of Indian military history.

As Nitin Gadkari pays homage, it is a moment to reflect on the legacy of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, whose leadership and contributions continue to inspire generations in the armed forces and beyond.
