On the 6th of March, Nitin Gadkari pays tribute to eminent Marathi Kadambari writer Padma Ranjit Desai on his commemoration day.

Padma Ranjit Desai was a prolific Marathi writer who left an indelible mark on the literary landscape of India. She is remembered for her outstanding contributions to Marathi literature, especially in the field of historical fiction.

Padma Ranjit Desai was born on 8 April 1928, in Pune, Maharashtra. Her father, Ranjit Desai, was a renowned Marathi writer, and her mother, Indumati Desai, was a school teacher. Padma’s parents instilled a love of literature in her from an early age, and she started writing stories and poems as a child.

Padma Ranjit Desai completed her schooling in Pune and went on to earn a degree in History and Political Science from Fergusson College. She later obtained a Master’s degree in Marathi Literature from the University of Pune.

Padma Ranjit Desai began her literary career in the early 1950s. She started by writing short stories and poems for Marathi magazines and newspapers. Her first book, a collection of short stories titled “Pachadlele Popat,” was published in 1957.

However, it was her historical novels that brought her widespread acclaim and established her as a leading figure in Marathi literature. Padma’s historical novels were meticulously researched and beautifully written, and they brought to life important moments and figures from Indian history.

Padma Ranjit Desai’s novels were not only popular with Marathi readers but also won critical acclaim. She received numerous awards and honors during her career, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for “Raja Shivchatrapati.”
