Ram Shewalkar was born on 2 March 1931 in Maharashtra, India. Shewalker obtained postgraduate college degrees in Marathi and Sanskrit literature. After spending several years teaching Sanskrit in a college, he served as the principal of a college in Wani, Yavatmal district, for over 25 years.

Hridaynath Mangeshkar, a musician, and singer presented the popular musical program Amrutacha Ghanu to the public in Maharashtra in the 1980s, which was based on the poetic compositions of Dnyaneshwar. Prior to his musical performances, Shewalkar would provide a learned analysis of Dnyaneshwar’s works. The commentary was widely praised by Marathi-speaking people in Maharashtra.
