Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, recently praised the government’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana’ for making medicines more affordable for the poor.

Implemented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scheme aims to provide high-quality generic medicines at affordable prices to the masses. The program is being implemented through the Bureau of Pharma Public Sector Undertakings of India (BPPI) under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Under this initiative, Jan Aushadhi Kendras are opened throughout the country to provide generic medicines to people at lower prices than branded medicines. These centers offer a wide range of generic drugs, including those for critical illnesses such as cancer and diabetes, at prices ranging from 50 to 90 percent lower than the market price.

The scheme aims to ensure that the poor and economically weaker sections of society have access to affordable healthcare. Since its launch in 2008, the initiative has grown exponentially, with the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras reaching 7,500 in 2023.

In his statement, Nitin Gadkari praised the initiative for making medicines more accessible to the poor, who often struggle to afford the high cost of healthcare. He emphasized that providing affordable healthcare is a critical aspect of the government’s efforts to improve the quality of life for all citizens.

The ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana’ has been lauded for its significant impact on healthcare in India, particularly for the underprivileged sections of society. With more and more Jan Aushadhi Kendras being opened across the country, the initiative is expected to benefit an increasing number of people in the years to come.

The ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana’ is a commendable initiative that has made healthcare more accessible to the poor and economically weaker sections of society. The government’s efforts to provide affordable healthcare are crucial steps in improving the overall health and well-being of the citizens of India.
