Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister, extends hearty wishes to all fellow countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Holika Dahan. Celebrated with great fervor and zeal, Holika Dahan marks the symbolic victory of good over evil in Hindu mythology.
Holika Dahan, also known as Chotti Holi, is observed lighting a bonfire, signifying the burning of the demoness, Holika. This ritual holds deep significance, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness over malevolence. It precedes the colorful festival of Holi, which heralds the arrival of spring.
According to legend, Holika, the sister of Hiranyakashipu, was granted a boon making her immune to fire. However, her endeavor to end her nephew Prahlada’s life by placing him in a bonfire resulted in her own demise, while Prahlada miraculously emerged unharmed. This tale serves as a reminder of the ultimate victory of virtue over vice.
In South India, the occasion is referred to as Kama Dahanam, associated with the legend of Shiva annihilating Kamadeva with his third eye. In rural Tamil Nadu, pantomimes of Kamadeva are performed, and effigies symbolizing him are burnt.
As the country rejoices in the spirit of Holika Dahan, Nitin Gadkari’s warm wishes resonate, fostering unity and goodwill among all citizens. Let us embrace the essence of this festival and strive to uphold the values of righteousness and compassion in our lives.
