Nitin Gupta, IRS (IT:86) (Retd.), assumed charge as Chairperson of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) on July 23, 2025. A seasoned officer of the Income Tax Department, he previously served as Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) from June 2022 to June 2024. During his tenure, he spearheaded transformative reforms by integrating artificial intelligence and big data analytics to enhance tax compliance, transparency, and ease of doing business. His leadership also saw the direct tax-to-GDP ratio hit record highs and consistent growth in tax revenues.
Joining him at NFRA are three newly appointed Full-Time Members:
- Ms. Smita Jhingran, IRS (IT:86) (Retd.), who previously served as Secretary, Competition Commission of India, and played a pivotal role in global alignment of India’s auditing practices during her first tenure at NFRA.
- Shri P. Daniel, IDES (1989) (Retd.), former Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission, renowned for promoting preventive vigilance and governance reforms across public institutions and defence land records.
- Shri Sushil Kumar Jaiswal, IA&AS (1993) (Retd.), former Director General of Audit (Central Receipts), with rich expertise in auditing central revenues and UN peacekeeping operations.
The Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, administered the Oaths of Office and Secrecy to the newly appointed Chairperson and Members at a formal ceremony on July 23, 2025.
This new leadership marks a strategic reinforcement of NFRA’s role in enhancing financial reporting quality, auditing standards, and corporate governance in India, aligning further with global benchmarks.
