The official X account of North Western Railway has taken a creative approach to address a frequently perplexing query regarding booking tickets for children under the age of five. In a recent X post, the North Western Railways ingeniously employed a cartoon to demystify the process.
The cartoon illustrates a moment at a train station where an individual, inquiring in Hindi, asks the Ticket Collector, “Can seats be reserved for children under 5 years of age?” The corresponding text on the graphic confirms, “Seats can indeed be reserved for children below 5 years of age.”
To book a seat, the passenger will have to pay the full fare.” In simpler terms, booking a ticket for kids under five is only necessary if the child will be occupying a separate berth or seat; otherwise, the child can travel for free alongside the guardian.

The cartoon shared by North Western Railways succinctly explains the booking process for young travelers. Railway Ministry’s Official Statement
According to a Railway Ministry press note, “Children under five years of age shall be carried free. However, a Personal berth or seat (in a chair car) shall not be given. Therefore, the purchase of any ticket is not required provided a separate berth is not claimed. However, if a berth/seat shall be sought voluntarily for children of age below 5 years, then the full adult fare shall be charged.”
