NTPC Launches First Solar Project at IIT Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN), a subsidiary of NTPC, recently commissioned its first Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Project at IIT Jodhpur, Rajasthan. This one MW Grid-connected Solar Project has been implemented under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model. The RESCO model focuses on providing energy services from renewable sources and offers numerous benefits.

RESCO Model: The Framework for Implementation

The Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Project at IIT Jodhpur has been implemented under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model. In this model, a renewable energy service company designs, builds, funds, and operates the solar power plant, while consumers pay the developer based on the assured monthly unit generation per kilowatt (kW). The distribution company (DISCOM) adjusts the generated units in the consumer’s electricity bill.

Importance of the RESCO Model:

The RESCO model holds significant importance in driving the adoption of renewable energy sources. Here are a few key reasons why the RESCO model is valuable:

  1. Increased Renewable Energy Deployment: The RESCO model facilitates the installation of renewable energy systems by eliminating the financial burden and operational complexities for consumers. It encourages businesses and institutions to adopt clean energy solutions, such as solar power, without making substantial upfront investments.
  2. Lowered Carbon Footprint: By promoting the RESCO model, NVVN contributes to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. In the case of the IIT Jodhpur rooftop solar project, the annual reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is estimated to be 1,060 tonnes. This initiative aligns with national and global sustainability goals, fostering a greener future.
  3. Cost Savings: Through the RESCO model, consumers can enjoy the benefits of solar energy without having to bear the initial capital costs. They only pay for the units of energy generated by the solar plant. This enables consumers to reduce their electricity bills in the long run, resulting in cost savings.

Benefits of NVVN’s Rooftop Solar Project:

The implementation of the RESCO model through NVVN’s rooftop solar project offers several advantages:

  1. Clean Energy Generation: The one MW rooftop solar project at IIT Jodhpur will generate approximately 14.9 lakh units of electricity annually. This renewable energy source will meet 15% of the institute’s electricity requirements, contributing to a cleaner and sustainable energy mix.
  2. Reduced Dependence on Conventional Sources: By adopting solar power, IIT Jodhpur reduces its reliance on conventional sources of electricity. This diversification of energy sources enhances energy security and mitigates the risks associated with fossil fuel price fluctuations.
  3. Technological Innovation and Research: The installation of the solar project at IIT Jodhpur provides a live demonstration of renewable energy technology on the campus. It serves as an educational and research platform, fostering innovation in the field of solar energy and inspiring students to pursue sustainable solutions.

NVVN’s commissioning of the Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Project at IIT Jodhpur showcases the successful implementation of the RESCO model. By leveraging this model, NVVN enables the adoption of renewable energy solutions without upfront costs, promoting clean energy generation, reducing carbon emissions, and achieving cost savings. Such initiatives pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future, while also fostering research and innovation in renewable energy technologies.
