Official Data For “Employment–Unemployment” Is Released By (MoSPI) Based On The PLFS.

A private company conducted a survey and found that the unemployment rate in December 2022 will be high. This news has been published in some sections of the media. Many private companies and organizations conduct surveys based on their own methodologies, which are often neither scientific nor based on internationally accepted norms.

The methodology used by these companies/organizations is usually biased towards over-reporting unemployment or under-reporting employment due to their own sampling procedure and definitions used for collecting data on employment/unemployment. Such survey results should be used with caution.

The MoSPI releases the official data on “Employment–Unemployment” based on the PLFS. The latest Annual PLFS report is available for the survey period July 2020 to June 2021 for estimates at the all-India level. The quarterly PLFS report is also released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for Rural areas. The quarterly reports are available from July to September 2022.

The available PLFS report shows that the worker population ratio is The employment rate for those aged 15 and up was 44.5% during July-September 2022, compared to 43.4% during the same quarter in 2019.

The unemployment rate during July-September, 2019 was 8.3% compared to 7.2% in July-September, 2022. The data from the PLFS indicates that the employment market not only recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic but is now at higher levels than before the pandemic.
