Mahavir Jayanti holds immense importance in Jainism, commemorating the birth of Lord Mahavira, the twenty-fourth and final Tirthankara or supreme preacher of the present era. According to Jain tradition, Lord Mahavira’s birth is celebrated on the thirteenth day of the bright half of the lunar month of Chaitra, usually falling in March or April on the Gregorian calendar.
Born in Kshatriyakund, Bihar, Mahavira’s teachings emphasized non-violence, compassion, and self-discipline, inspiring generations to lead lives of righteousness and harmony. His birthplace, whether Kundagram or Kundalpur, remains revered by devotees, symbolizing the profound impact of his life and teachings.
PM Modi reflects on Mahavira’s name, ‘Vardhaman,’ signifying growth and prosperity, mirroring the aspirations of a developing India. He underscores the democratic principles upheld in Mahavira’s birthplace, highlighting the significance of governance rooted in the will of the people.
