“The vibrant Dhanu Yatra is associated with the culture of Odisha. As this Yatra begins, my greetings to everyone. May this Yatra further the spirit of harmony and happiness in our society”.
Know About Dhanu Yatra:-
Dhanu Jatra or Dhanu Yatra, an annual drama-based open-air theatrical performance celebrated in Bargarh, Odisha, is a colorful event. It is the world’s largest open-air theater, one that finds a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records, and is spread across an 8 km radius area around the Bargarh municipality.
The mythological story of Krishna (locally known as Krushna), and his demon uncle Kansa is the basis for this. The play, which originates in Bargarh, is now being performed in many other places in Western Odisha.
The original one at Bargarh is the major one of these. It is about the episode of Krishna and Balaram’s visit to Mathura to witness the Dhanu ceremony organized by their maternal uncle Kansa.
The play starts with emperor Ugrasena’s dethroning by the angry prince Kansa, over the marriage of his sister Debaki with Basudeba, and ends with Kansa’s death, and Ugrasen restoring back to become the king.
There is no written script used in these performances. Kansa can penalize people for their mistakes during this festival. Biju Patnaik and his ministers were fined once. The Government of India’s Department of Culture has designated Dhanu Yatra as a National Festival as of November 2014.
