PM Modi Launches Semiconductor Projects to Boost India’s Tech Independence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded the unveiling of three major semiconductor projects, collectively valued at approximately Rs 1.25 lakh crores, through a video conferencing ceremony titled ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’. The momentous occasion saw the foundation stones being laid for these projects, aimed at catapulting India into the forefront of semiconductor manufacturing.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi hailed the historic significance of the event, emphasizing its pivotal role in shaping India’s future. He extolled the transformative potential of the semiconductor manufacturing projects, situated in Dholera and Sanand in Gujarat, and Morigaon in Assam, towards establishing India as a global semiconductor hub.

Highlighting the virtual presence of semiconductor industry leaders from Taiwan, Prime Minister Modi expressed optimism for the country’s burgeoning semiconductor sector. He underscored the event’s unprecedented reach, with over 60,000 educational institutions participating, signifying the youth’s integral role in India’s technological advancement.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized the pivotal role of semiconductor technology in the 21st century, stressing the importance of India’s self-reliance and modernization efforts in this domain. He outlined India’s transition from missing out on previous industrial revolutions to leading the charge in Industry 4.0, propelled by initiatives like the semiconductor mission.

“Acknowledging the global shortage of semiconductor supply chains exacerbated by the pandemic, Prime Minister Modi affirmed India’s commitment to filling this void. He elucidated India’s strategic advantages in technology, nuclear power, and digital infrastructure, emphasizing the nation’s readiness to assume a pivotal role in global semiconductor production”.

The Prime Minister Modi underscored the government’s concerted efforts to streamline regulations and incentivize investment in the semiconductor sector. He highlighted the country’s burgeoning electronics and hardware manufacturing landscape, propelled by initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.

Prime Minister Modi lauded India’s strides in research and innovation, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. He commended the burgeoning talent pool in chip design and manufacturing, citing it as a testament to India’s evolving tech ecosystem.
