PM Modi Mourns the Demise of Veteran Actor Sadhu Meher: A Stalwart in Indian Cinema

In a heartfelt tribute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief over the demise of the legendary actor, director, and producer Sadhu Meher. The stalwart, who made significant contributions to both Hindi and Odia cinema, passed away on February 2, 2024, at the age of 84.

PM Modi conveyed, “The demise of Shri Sadhu Meher Ji is a profound loss for the world of films and our cultural heritage.” Recognizing Meher’s exceptional cinematic performances and unwavering dedication, the Prime Minister hailed him as a luminary in the realm of Indian cinema.

Sadhu Meher’s career spanned across both Odia and Hindi films, showcasing his versatility and talent. He initially gained recognition in Hindi cinema with notable roles in films like Bhuvan Shome, Ankur, and Mrigaya. Later, he shifted his focus to Odia films, becoming a prominent figure in the mid-1980s era of Parallel Cinema.

His contribution to the critically acclaimed film Ankur earned him the prestigious National Film Award for Best Actor. The government of India honored Meher with the Padma Shri in 2017, recognizing his remarkable contributions to the world of cinema.

In addition to his cinematic achievements, Sadhu Meher left an indelible mark on the small screen with his roles in the TV series Byomkesh Bakshi, featuring in the episodes “Aadim Shatru (Part 1 & 2)” & “Chakrant” as Anadi Haldar and Bishupal, respectively.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences, stating, “My thoughts are with his family, colleagues, and many fans mourning this irreplaceable loss.” He further emphasized that Sadhu Meher’s memory would be cherished through the rich artistic heritage he leaves behind.

The veteran actor was also a recipient of the Odisha State Film Award, specifically the Jayadev Award for outstanding contribution to Odia Cinema in 2008. As the curtains fall on Sadhu Meher’s illustrious journey, the legacy of his remarkable performances and contributions to Indian cinema will continue to resonate in the hearts of fans and the film fraternity alike.
