In a historic ceremony held at the Tendrelthang in Thimphu, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of India was honored with the Order of the Druk Gyalpo, Bhutan’s most esteemed civilian award, by His Majesty the King of Bhutan. This distinguished recognition underscores the exceptional bond shared between India and Bhutan, as Prime Minister Modi becomes the inaugural foreign leader to be bestowed with this prestigious accolade.
The announcement of Prime Minister Modi’s conferment with the Order of the Druk Gyalpo was made during Bhutan’s 114th National Day celebrations held at the Tashichhodzong in Thimphu in December 2021. The award acknowledges Prime Minister Modi’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the friendship between India and Bhutan, as well as his people-centric leadership. The citation accompanying the award also lauds India’s ascent as a global powerhouse under his guidance and celebrates the special relationship shared between Bhutan and India.
Prime Minister Modi, in response to receiving the honor, emphasized that the award is a testament to the enduring and unique ties between the two nations, considering it an accolade bestowed upon the 1.4 billion people of India, Bharat. His remarks underscore the depth of the relationship between India and Bhutan, reflecting on the shared values and mutual respect that characterize their partnership.
The Order of the Druk Gyalpo holds the highest precedence in Bhutan’s honor system, established as a decoration for lifetime achievement. It stands as the pinnacle of recognition, surpassing all other orders, decorations, and medals. Prime Minister Modi’s reception of this esteemed honor not only acknowledges his contributions but also highlights the significance of the bilateral relationship between India and Bhutan, setting a strong foundation for continued cooperation and friendship between the two nations.
