PM Modi Extends Warm Wishes on Ugadi, Marking the Hindu New Year

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to extend heartfelt wishes to all on the occasion of Ugadi, the Hindu New Year. “Happy Ugadi everyone!” he exclaimed, marking the commencement of the new year according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar.

Ugadi, also known as Yugadi or Samvatsarādi, heralds new beginnings and is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Goa. It signifies the onset of spring and the commencement of a new lunar cycle.

The word “Ugadi” is derived from “Uga,” meaning Course of Stars, and “Adi,” signifying Starting. It falls on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra, typically aligning with late March or early April in the Gregorian calendar.

Traditional observances of Ugadi include drawing colorful patterns on the floor known as Muggulu or Rangoli, adorning doors with mango leaves called torana, exchanging gifts, giving charity to the underprivileged, and indulging in oil massages followed by special baths. The highlight of the festivities is the preparation and sharing of a special dish called pachadi, symbolizing the array of flavors one may encounter in the upcoming year.

In Karnataka, Ugadi is celebrated as Souramana Ugadi or Mesha Sankranti, coinciding with the transit of the sun into the Aries Constellation. This auspicious occasion is also observed as Baisakhi in various parts of India.

Ugadi holds significant historical and cultural importance, with ancient texts and inscriptions documenting charitable donations to Hindu temples and community centers on this day. It is not only celebrated in India but also recognized as a New Year by Hindus in other regions, such as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra.

As PM Modi’s warm wishes resonate across the nation, Ugadi stands as a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry and traditions that unite communities in celebrating new beginnings and prosperity.
