Prime Minister Narendra Modi fondly remembers the late Thiru Vijayakanth, popularly known as Captain, who recently passed away. In a heartfelt tribute, PM Modi acknowledges Captain’s multifaceted persona, celebrating his contributions to Indian cinema and his courageous foray into politics.
“Captain’s cinematic journey, from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of Tamil cinema, is lauded as a story of passion, perseverance, and unwavering dedication. His films, beyond entertaining, mirrored societal ethos, addressing issues of injustice, corruption, violence, and extremism. PM Modi commends Captain’s unique ability to blend entertainment with social messaging, making him stand out in the industry”.
The Prime Minister emphasizes the Captain’s love for rural life and culture, noting that even with global fame, his connection to village life remained intact. Captain’s films, often reflecting his rural experiences, aimed to bridge the urban-rural gap. PM Modi applauds Captain’s impact beyond cinema, as he ventured into politics, creating the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in 2005.
Captain’s entry into politics marked an act of courage and sacrifice, challenging the dominance of established political figures in Tamil Nadu. Despite the competitive landscape, he became the principal Opposition leader in 2011, reflecting his commitment to nationalism and social justice. PM Modi recalls their collaboration during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, where the NDA alliance achieved significant success.
Beyond professional accomplishments, PM Modi reflects on Captain’s life lessons for the youth – resilience, a never-say-die attitude, and dedication to overcoming challenges. Captain’s philanthropy, using fame and resources to contribute to society, showcases his largehearted nature. In Captain’s passing, the Prime Minister mourns the loss of a dear friend, an admired star, and a beloved leader. The legacy of Captain Vijayakanth lives on in the hearts of fans, the history of Tamil cinema, and the corridors of public service. PM Modi pledges to continue working towards realizing Captain’s vision for progress and social justice for all.
