Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu honored the 107th Annual Day and Convocation Ceremony of Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) in New Delhi, emphasizing the transformative role of medical science in today’s interconnected world.
In her address, the President underscored the expanding horizons of medical science, transcending mere treatment to encompass a wide spectrum of innovations. She noted the convergence of physical, digital, and biological realms in the wake of the 4th Industrial Revolution, citing advancements in synthetic biology and techniques like CRISPR gene editing as promising solutions to age-old challenges.
“However, President Murmu cautioned against the misuse of such technologies, urging the medical fraternity to uphold ethics and values in their professional endeavors. She emphasized the importance of an integrated approach to healthcare, advocating for the holistic concept of ‘one health’ to address complex medical issues”.
“Acknowledging the revered status of doctors in society, the President urged healthcare professionals to embrace their moral responsibility and prioritize compassion, kindness, and empathy in their practice. She emphasized the significance of character and humanity alongside professional competence, echoing Gandhi Ji’s belief that knowledge without character is a sin”.
President Murmu commended LHMC for its initiatives in healthcare innovation, including its registration as an Organ Transplant Retrieval Centre and the implementation of the Comprehensive Antibiotic Stewardship Program to combat antimicrobial resistance. She highlighted collaborations such as the iDrone Initiative for Blood Bag Delivery and the establishment of the National Human Milk Bank ‘Vatsalya – Matri Amrit Kosh’ with the Government of Norway, aimed at promoting breastfeeding and reducing infant mortality rates.
President Droupadi Murmu’s presence at LHMC’s Annual Day underscored the critical role of medical education and innovation in shaping the future of healthcare. Her message resonated with the importance of ethical practice, compassionate care, and collaborative efforts in addressing the evolving healthcare challenges of the modern era.
