In a heartfelt ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, on September 5, 2023, President Smt. Droupadi Murmu conferred National Awards on teachers from various corners of the country. This distinguished event, coinciding with Teachers’ Day, paid tribute to the tireless efforts and unwavering dedication of educators who play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the nation.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu underscored the profound importance of elementary education in every individual’s life. She elaborated on what she referred to as the “three-H formula” for the holistic development of children, emphasizing the significance of the heart, head, and hand.
- Heart: The heart represents sensitivity, human values, strength of character, and morality. President Murmu highlighted the importance of instilling these qualities in children as they form the foundation of compassionate and responsible citizens.
- Head: The head, or the brain, signifies mental development, reasoning power, and the ability to acquire knowledge. Intellectual growth is a cornerstone of a well-rounded education.
- Hand: The hand represents respect for manual skills and physical labor. President Murmu stressed the value of appreciating the dignity of labor and fostering practical skills in children.
President Murmu emphasized that nurturing all these aspects in children is vital for their all-round development. It is only through this holistic approach that we can shape individuals who contribute positively to society.
Recognizing the increasing participation of women in the teaching profession, President Murmu urged that a greater number of female teachers should be recipients of Teachers’ Awards. Empowering female students and teachers is not only crucial for education but also plays a pivotal role in women’s empowerment at large.
The President lauded the pivotal role teachers play in building the nation’s future. She emphasized that quality education is the fundamental right of every child, and teachers are the torchbearers in achieving this goal. The significance of teachers as nation-builders is prominently acknowledged in the National Education Policy 2020.
President Murmu also acknowledged the unique bond between teachers and students. Teachers have a profound influence on their student’s lives, and it is their duty to recognize each child’s unique abilities and help them develop with care and sensitivity.
She concluded by stating that every teacher has the privilege of sharing love and knowledge with the young minds entrusted to them. Teachers are remembered not only for the knowledge they impart but also for the love and encouragement they provide. Ultimately, it is the love and affection bestowed upon students that leave an indelible mark on their lives.
