President Murmu Inaugurates the National Seminar on Tribes of Keonjhar

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated a national seminar titled ‘Tribes of Keonjhar: People, Culture and Heritage’ at Gambharia, Keonjhar, which was organized by Dharanidhar University on February 29, 2024. The event also featured an exhibition showcasing tribal costumes, jewelry, and food items.

“Addressing the gathering, President Murmu underscored the significance of Keonjhar, a tribal-dominated district known for its natural beauty and diverse tribal communities including Munda, Kolh, Bhuiyan, Juang, Saanti, Bathudi, Gond, Santhal, Orang, and Kondh. She expressed confidence that the seminar participants would reach valuable conclusions regarding the preservation of tribal culture through discussions”.

President Murmu emphasized the importance of inclusive development, stating that neglecting any community hinders overall progress. She highlighted the Government of India’s initiative, PM-JANMAN, aimed at empowering Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) by providing various essential services. She praised efforts to preserve and promote tribal arts, cultures, and crafts, acknowledging their significance in safeguarding tribal identity and dignity.

Highlighting tribal values of equality and democratic principles, President Murmu emphasized the collective spirit of tribal societies, where “we” prevails over “I”. She stressed the role of tribal women in empowerment, noting the absence of gender discrimination in tribal communities.

“Addressing educators, President Murmu urged them to engage in research alongside teaching, emphasizing the wealth of traditional knowledge within tribal societies. She encouraged teachers to explore tribal villages, learn from experienced community members, and inspire students to research traditional practices and their applications for the benefit of society”.

President Murmu reminded students of their potential to achieve self-reliance through education and skill development. She encouraged them to embrace technology while cherishing their cultural roots.

President Droupadi Murmu’s remarks underscore the importance of preserving tribal heritage, promoting inclusivity in development, and harnessing traditional knowledge for societal benefit. The seminar serves as a platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration towards safeguarding and celebrating India’s rich tribal diversity.
