Jallianwala Bagh: President Murmu offered a poignant tribute to the courageous freedom fighters who met their fate at Jallianwala Bagh on April 13, 1919. Remembering their sacrifice during the annual Baishakhi fair, where they gathered to protest the oppressive Rowlatt Act and the unjust arrests of Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satya Pal, the President acknowledged their unwavering commitment to Swaraj.
The massacre, orchestrated by temporary brigadier General R. E. H. Dyer, left a deep scar on the nation’s conscience. Surrounded by Gurkha and Sikh infantry regiments, innocent civilians were mercilessly fired upon, resulting in hundreds of deaths and countless injuries. Despite the passage of time, the pain and trauma of that fateful day continue to resonate in the collective memory of the nation.
Britain’s lack of formal apology for the atrocity serves as a stark reminder of the need for acknowledgment and reconciliation. While expressions of regret were voiced in 2019, the wounds inflicted by the massacre remain unhealed.
The President’s words underscore the indomitable spirit of those who laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. Their legacy of patriotism continues to inspire future generations, serving as a beacon of hope and resilience in the ongoing quest for justice and liberty.
