The 69th convocation of IIT Kharagpur, held on December 18, 2023, saw the esteemed presence and address by the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu. Commending the global reputation of the IIT system as a talent and technology incubation center, she acknowledged IIT Kharagpur’s unique status as the country’s first IIT, contributing significantly to the nation’s development over its 73-year journey.
President Murmu expressed satisfaction with IIT Kharagpur’s pursuit of international alliances, aligning with the Government of India’s policy for the global standing of IITs. Emphasizing the significance of global recognition for the Indian education system, she urged the institution to focus on not only providing quality education but also enhancing its international ranking, attracting global talent.
Addressing the role of educational institutions like IIT Kharagpur in shaping India’s future, the President stressed the need for revolutionary efforts in innovation and technology for the 21st century. She emphasized the responsible use of technology for social justice, equality, and bridging societal gaps, citing digital payment systems as a positive example.
President Murmu highlighted India’s ascent as a major world power, calling for solutions to global challenges in the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. Pointing to technological advancements like computerization, solar energy, genomics, and large language models, she envisioned a better and more inclusive world. Encouraging a growth-oriented, futuristic mindset with gratitude towards the nation, she expressed confidence in the ability to create a better and safer future for both the country and the world.
