In a notable stride towards economic inclusivity, Rahul Gandhi has lauded the Congress government in Rajasthan for pioneering a new law aimed at empowering gig workers. This groundbreaking legislation marks the first of its kind in India and seeks to provide more than 3 lakh gig workers in the state with their due rights and self-respect.
The gig economy, characterized by flexible and independent work arrangements, has been growing exponentially in India, offering employment opportunities to a vast number of individuals, especially the youth. However, gig workers have often faced uncertainty in their work and lacked financial security due to the nature of their jobs, which often involve being on the streets as taxi drivers, delivery personnel, and more.
Rahul Gandhi’s India Jodo journey provided him with first-hand insights into the challenges faced by gig workers. The encounters with these hardworking individuals further highlighted the urgency to address their concerns and ensure their well-being. Many expressed their grievances about the lack of financial security and the absence of concrete plans or government support for their welfare.
Recognizing the importance of safeguarding the rights and financial stability of gig workers, Rahul Gandhi emphasized that the new law in Rajasthan would serve as a foundation for reliable employment and financial security for millions of youth engaged in the gig economy across India.
The Congress leader also praised Karnataka’s efforts in addressing the issue, where the recent budget introduced accident insurance coverage of up to 4 lakhs for gig workers. He emphasized the need for policies that not only support gig workers but also consider the welfare of those who employ them.
Gandhi’s commitment to standing with the poor and toiling people of India resonates with his party’s efforts to ensure that the fruits of their hard work do not go unnoticed. He assured that promises made to these workers would be fulfilled, aiming to empower every hardworking citizen with economic strength and full rights.
The implementation of this new law in Rajasthan and the initiatives undertaken in Karnataka represent significant strides toward addressing the concerns of gig workers, paving the way for more inclusive economic growth and opportunities.
