Raj Babbar was born on 23 June 1952 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh to a Punjabi family, but he hails from Tundla, Firozabad. Raj Babbar did his initial schooling at Mufid-E-Aam Inter College, Agra. Raj Babbar is an alumnus of the 1975 class of the National School of Drama and a graduate of Agra College.

Personal life:

Nadira Zaheer, daughter of noted theatre personality Sajjad Zaheer, married Raj Babbar. Nadira is the mother of Arya Babbar and Juhi Babbar. Raj Babbar married the actress Smita Patil, and she gave birth to their son Prateik Babbar. He has two younger brothers, Kishan and Vinod (deceased), and four younger sisters.
