The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, has unveiled a transformative plan to invigorate transportation infrastructure in Assam, bolstering economic prospects and connectivity in the region. With a commitment of more than ₹645 crores, these initiatives under the flagship Sagarmala program of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways seek to propel the development of 10 waterways projects along the revered river Brahmaputra (National Waterways 2).

Each project is meticulously crafted to address the region’s specific needs, focusing on enhancing terminals and riverine infrastructure strategically. From the construction of slipways at pivotal locations like Maya Ghat in Dhubri district to the establishment of passenger terminals at Ghagor in North Lakhimpur district and Bahari in Barpeta district, the proposals are geared towards optimizing connectivity and facilitating seamless transportation across Assam.

Sarbananda Sonowal, speaking on the occasion, emphasized the government’s dedication to exploring the vast potential of waterways under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He highlighted the pivotal role of the Brahmaputra River as a lifeline for the people of the northeast and Assam, reiterating the government’s commitment to harnessing its power for economic prosperity.

These initiatives mark a significant stride towards boosting transportation efficiency, stimulating industrial development, and catalyzing trade in the region. With projects exceeding ₹1,000 crore initiated under the Sagarmala program in the Northeast, including Assam, the government underscores its unwavering commitment to the region’s progress.

Moreover, the Ministry is spearheading efforts to develop river tourism and water sports along the Brahmaputra, with plans for constructing seven tourist jetties at key locations. This endeavor not only promotes tourism but also enhances the overall socio-economic landscape of the region.

Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the substantial progress made in waterways development under the current government, contrasting it with the neglect witnessed in previous administrations. With projects aimed at bolstering maritime infrastructure, modernizing fleets, and enhancing last-mile connectivity, the government envisions the Brahmaputra River reclaiming its historical significance as a thriving trade route.

The government’s holistic approach towards maritime development extends beyond Assam, encompassing the entire nation. With a focus on port infrastructure expansion and the development of mega ports, coupled with ambitious targets outlined in the Maritime India Vision, India is charting a comprehensive course towards a brighter maritime future.

The development of an Eastern Grid, comprising rivers like Brahmaputra and Barak, holds the promise of regional integration and enhanced trade with South Asia and Eastern South Asia, unlocking substantial economic potential.

Noteworthy achievements in waterways development, such as the significant increase in cargo handled via the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol route and the establishment of the first Ship Repair facility in the Northeast, underscore the government’s commitment to transformative growth.

As the region gears up for remarkable growth and prosperity in its maritime sector, ongoing projects like the comprehensive development of National Waterway-2 and infrastructure enhancements at various terminals promise to redefine connectivity and economic prospects in Assam and the Northeast at large.

The substantial investment in waterways projects in Assam heralds a new era of connectivity and economic vitality for the region, reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering growth and prosperity in the Northeast.
