Sarbananda Sonowal to Inaugurate India’s First Lighthouse Festival in Goa today.

In a historic moment for India’s maritime heritage and tourism landscape, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, is all set to inaugurate the country’s first-ever Lighthouse Festival. The stage for this grand event is none other than the majestic Fort Aguada Lighthouse, located in the picturesque coastal city of Panjim, Goa.

The Lighthouse Festival, a three-day extravaganza, will illuminate the Goan skies and coastal landscapes from September 23rd to 25th, 2023. This festival is not just a celebration but also a significant step towards realizing a visionary goal – transforming historic lighthouses across India into vibrant and engaging tourist destinations.

The inaugural session of this festival will witness the presence of key dignitaries, including the Chief Minister of Goa, Pramod Sawant, the Minister of State for Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Tourism, Shri Shripad Naik, and Tourism Minister of Goa, Shri Rohan Khaunte, among other esteemed guests.

A Visionary Initiative: Lighthouse Heritage Tourism

The genesis of this remarkable event lies in the visionary initiative called ‘Lighthouse Heritage Tourism,’ championed by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. This initiative aims to breathe new life into 75 historic lighthouses across India, reviving them as key tourism spots. These lighthouses are not only part of India’s maritime history but also offer an opportunity to showcase their rich cultural significance and aesthetic allure.

“The transformation of lighthouses into captivating tourist sites aligns perfectly with the visionary approach of India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. The endeavor seeks to leverage these magnificent structures to not only celebrate their historical importance but also to boost local economies through tourism”.

Shri Sonowal expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, saying, “Commencing this historic Lighthouse festival across the nation today brings immense joy to the entire team at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.” Lighthouses, which were long ignored from any potential value creation beyond their role as navigational tools, were identified by Prime Minister Narendra Modiji to be developed from a touristic point of view and allow them to become a lynchpin of local tourism and, at the same time, generate income for the country.”

The Lighthouse Festival Experience

India’s first-ever Lighthouse Festival promises a carnival-style experience at the iconic Fort Aguada in Goa. Attendees can look forward to a kaleidoscope of activities, including performances by local artists, dance troupes, food and culinary stalls offering delectable delights, and music concerts that will keep the spirit of celebration alive.

Beyond the festivities, the Lighthouse Festival will also be a platform for intellectual engagement. Historians, archaeologists, cultural anthropologists, and anyone with an interest in history, culture, and society will have the opportunity to participate in intriguing discussions centered around our rich marine history. It’s a unique blend of entertainment and education, making the festival a must-visit for locals and tourists alike.
