The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications, has raised an alarm regarding fraudulent calls targeting citizens. According to the advisory, individuals are receiving calls purportedly from DoT, with threats of mobile number disconnection or allegations of involvement in illegal activities.

Moreover, the advisory highlights another concerning trend: WhatsApp calls originating from foreign numbers, such as those starting with +92, where impostors pose as government officials to deceive unsuspecting individuals.

These deceitful tactics are orchestrated by cybercriminals aiming to obtain personal information for nefarious purposes, including cybercrime and financial fraud. The DoT unequivocally states that it does not authorize anyone to make such calls on its behalf.

In response, the DoT urges the public to remain vigilant and refrain from divulging any information upon receiving such calls. Additionally, citizens are encouraged to report any fraudulent communications through the ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ facility on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in). This proactive reporting aids in thwarting telecom resource misuse for cybercrimes and financial fraud.

Furthermore, individuals are advised to utilize the ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal to verify and report any unauthorized mobile connections linked to their names.

For those who have fallen victim to cybercrimes or financial frauds, the DoT recommends reporting incidents to the cyber-crime helpline at 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in.

The DoT emphasizes the importance of collective vigilance and prompt reporting in combating fraudulent activities, safeguarding citizens’ interests, and preserving the integrity of the telecommunications network.
