The UK government has announced that sector leaders are joining forces to advance the national mission to beat dementia, inspired by the late Dame Barbara Windsor. The mission is a response to the increasing number of people affected by dementia in the UK, with an estimated 850,000 people currently living with the condition.
Representatives from health and social care, academia, and charities will collaborate to develop a new dementia research strategy and work to improve care for people with dementia and their families. The sector leaders will be guided by the Dame Barbara Windsor Foundation, which was established by the actress’s husband, Scott Mitchell, following her death from Alzheimer’s disease in 2020.
The mission will focus on improving early diagnosis and intervention for dementia, developing new treatments and therapies, and enhancing the quality of life for people with dementia and their families. The sector leaders will also work to improve awareness and understanding of dementia among the general public.
The government has committed £3.7 billion to dementia research since 2015 and aims to make the UK a global leader in dementia research and care. The sector leaders’ collaboration is expected to accelerate progress toward this goal and ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of dementia research and care.
Commenting on the announcement, Health, and Social Care Secretary, Sajid Javid said: “Dame Barbara Windsor was a national treasure and a tireless campaigner for dementia research and care. This mission is a fitting tribute to her memory and will ensure that we continue to make progress towards beating this devastating condition.”
The sector leaders’ collaboration is an important step towards achieving the national mission to beat dementia and will provide hope to the thousands of people affected by the condition. With continued investment and collaboration, it is hoped that significant progress will be made toward finding a cure for dementia and improving care for those affected by it.
