“Statistics Day” will be celebrated tomorrow, the chief guest will be Rao Inderjit Singh.

In acknowledgment of the exceptional and invaluable contributions made by the esteemed late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis to the fields of statistics and economic planning, the Government of India has officially established the 29th of June as an annual observance known as “Statistics Day.” This special day, coinciding with Professor Mahalanobis’ birth anniversary, aims to create public awareness, particularly among the younger generation, about the vital role and significance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.

Celebrating Statistics Day: Main Event of 2023

Venue and Chief Guest

The main event of Statistics Day 2023 is scheduled to take place at the Scope Convention Centre, Scope Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. Rao Inderjit Singh, a highly regarded figure in Indian politics, graces the event as the distinguished Chief Guest. Holding the position of Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Ministry of Planning, and Minister of State for the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Singh brings his extensive expertise and leadership to this auspicious occasion.

Dignitaries and Participants

Prominent figures such as Prof. Rajeeva Laxman Karandikar, Chairman of the National Statistical Commission (NSC), and Dr. G. P. Samanta, Chief Statistician of India & Secretary of MoSPI, along with other dignitaries, are scheduled to address the participants on this occasion. The event will also witness the participation of senior officers from Central Ministries/Departments, representatives from States/Union Territories, and international organizations.

Theme: Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for Monitoring Sustainable Development Goals

Each year, Statistics Day focuses on a theme of contemporary national importance. The theme for Statistics Day 2023 is “Alignment of State Indicator Framework with National Indicator Framework for Monitoring Sustainable Development Goals.” This theme highlights the significance of aligning state-level indicators with the national framework to effectively monitor the progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Technical Session and Expert Addresses

During the technical session of the event, officers from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will deliver a brief presentation on the theme. This session will be followed by addresses from experts who will provide valuable insights and perspectives on the alignment of state and national indicator frameworks for SDG monitoring.

On the Spot Essay Writing Competition and Felicitation

The winners of the “On the Spot Essay Writing Competition, 2023,” organized by MoSPI for Post Graduate Students, will be felicitated during the event. This recognition showcases the talent and knowledge of the participating students and encourages their continued engagement with statistics and its application in policy formulation and development.
