Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The UK government has announced a new initiative aimed at strengthening the partnership between the media and disaster response organizations. The initiative will provide training and support to journalists covering disaster events, helping them to better report on these incidents and provide accurate information to the public.

Disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis, can have a profound impact on communities and the environment. They can cause widespread destruction and disruption, and often result in loss of life.

Journalists from various media outlets in the Solomon Islands received training on Planning and Reporting on Natural Hazards and Disasters. The three-day workshop was attended by journalists from Solomon Star, Island Sun, SIBC, Solomon Business Magazine, Isles Media, Barava FM, Paoa FM, and provincial reporters.

The training aimed to educate journalists on the role of the National Disaster Management Office, disaster preparedness, and the importance of trauma-sensitive coverage during disasters. The training was part of a partnership between the UK government, the BBC, and the Media Association of Solomon Islands.

The British High Commissioner to the Solomon Islands and Nauru, Thomas Coward, emphasized the crucial role of the media during a crisis. The program has also conducted training sessions in Honiara, Auki, and Gizo. The CEO of the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation, Johnson Honimae, expressed gratitude for the training. The workshop was held at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara.
