Background/Context:
Launched in 2016 with just 73 ULBs, Swachh Survekshan (SS) under the Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban has grown into the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey, now encompassing more than 4,500 cities. The initiative has played a crucial role in transforming urban India’s approach to sanitation, creating behavioral change, and ensuring inclusive development.

This year’s awards reflect a strong shift toward sustainable urban living, with focused assessment on citizen participation, waste segregation, recycling, and safety of sanitation workers. The introduction of the Super Swachh League and new city-size categories sets the stage for a more competitive, equitable, and innovative approach to urban sanitation in India.
