As Telangana braces for a crucial democratic exercise, the upcoming 2023 Legislative Assembly election is set to unfold from 30th November to 5th December, a pivotal event where all 119 members of the state’s Assembly will be elected. The electoral process, inclusive of polling on 30th November and the subsequent counting on 3rd December, stands as a cornerstone in the region’s political landscape.
Background: Transition and Incumbency
The incumbent Telangana Legislative Assembly’s tenure, scheduled to conclude on 16th January 2024, sets the stage for a significant transition in the state’s governance. The previous assembly elections held in December 2018 resulted in the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (later renamed as Bharat Rashtra Samithi) forming the state government, with K. Chandrashekar Rao assuming the role of Chief Minister for the second time.
Election Commission’s Notification and Voter Statistics
On 9th October 2023, the Election Commission of India (ECI) issued the official notification for the 2023 Telangana Legislative Assembly election. The ECI revealed essential voter demographics, indicating 1,58,71,493 male voters, 1,58,43,339 female voters, and 2,557 transgender voters. Notably, there has been a 5.8% increase in the number of voters compared to January 2023. Simultaneously, 22,02,168 votes were removed from the electoral rolls across the state.
