The Coal Ministry aims to produce 186.63 million tonnes of coal

The Ministry of Coal has set forth an ambitious roadmap for coal production, outlining robust targets for the upcoming years. According to the ministry’s projections, the aim is to achieve a production milestone of 186.63 million tonnes exclusively from captive/commercial coal mines during the financial year 2024-25. This target is anticipated to surge to 225.69 million tonnes in the following fiscal year, FY 2025-26, with a long-term plan to reach an impressive 383.56 million tonnes by FY 2029-30.

As of December 31, 2023, the latest figures from the Ministry of Coal reveal that 50 captive/commercial coal mines are actively in production. Out of these, 32 mines are allocated to the power sector, 11 to the non-regulated sector, and seven mines are earmarked for coal sale. The commercial coal mines auction, initiated in 2020, has already yielded substantial results, with six mines boasting a cumulative peak rated capacity (PRC) of 14.87 million tonnes commencing production within just three and a half years.

The figures for December 2023 exhibit a commendable growth trajectory, with total coal production from captive and commercial coal mines reaching 14.04 million tonnes. This marks a notable 38% increase compared to the same month in the previous year, signifying the sector’s resilience and adaptability.

The overall coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial coal blocks have experienced remarkable growth in the period from April 1 to December 31, 2023. The cumulative coal production from these mines during this period stood at an impressive 98 million tonnes, underscoring the industry’s commitment to meeting the nation’s energy demands and fostering self-sufficiency in the coal sector.

The Ministry of Coal’s strategic targets align with the government’s vision for energy security and economic growth. As the coal sector continues to play a pivotal role in India’s energy landscape, these initiatives aim to not only meet domestic demand but also position the nation as a significant player in the global coal market. The remarkable progress within the sector signifies a positive trajectory for the coming years, with the Ministry of Coal leading the charge towards a more robust and self-reliant coal industry.
