Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Today, the Prime Minister, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, and the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Richard Marles MP, received the final Defence Strategic Review (DSR) report. The DSR is an independently led examination of Australia’s defense force posture, force structure, and capabilities. Written by Ex Defense Minister, His Excellency Professor Hon. Stephen Smith, and former Chief of the Defense Force, Sir Angus Houston, the review took six months to complete and was informed by engagement with over 150 individuals and experts.

The DSR also received over 360 submissions from the general public, interested parties, organizations, and state and territory governments. The Albanese Government will now take the necessary time to consider the review and its recommendations to ensure Defence’s capability and structure is fit for purpose and delivers the greatest return on investment.

Prime Minister Albanese stated, “The Defence Strategic Review will help prepare Australia to effectively respond to the changing regional and global strategic environment.” He further added that the review will ensure that Australia is well-equipped to safeguard the country and keep adversaries further from our shores.

Deputy Prime Minister Marles also praised the review, calling it an “ambitious and extensive examination of our strategic circumstances.” He thanked the authors of the report for their dedication and commitment to the task, which will inform key decision-making for the government.

The DSR is expected to underpin Australia’s Defence policy for decades to come, and the Albanese Government will use it to make informed decisions about Australia’s defense force posture, force structure, and capabilities. Overall, the DSR marks an important step forward in securing Australia’s safety and protecting its interests in the region and globally.
