The Prime Minister said, “We want to use our newfound sovereignty and global influence to lead the world in creating and deploying cutting-edge technology.” He added that the government’s ambition is to create an environment that encourages and supports the growth of tech businesses, attracts investment, and creates jobs.
The UK has a strong foundation in the tech sector, with companies such as ARM, DeepMind, and Improbable, and a thriving startup ecosystem. However, the government’s plan is to take the country to the next level and compete with tech giants like the United States and China.
To achieve its goal, the government has announced several initiatives, including the establishment of a new agency called the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), which will have a budget of £800 million. ARIA will have the freedom to fund high-risk, high-reward research projects that have the potential to transform industries and tackle global challenges.
The government will also create a Digital Strategy Taskforce to develop a new digital strategy for the country and ensure that the UK’s regulatory environment is supportive of tech innovation. The task force will be chaired by the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden.
The government’s plan has received support from the tech industry. Karen Melonie Gould, CEO of BIMA (British Interactive Media Association), said, “The UK tech industry is a real success story, and the government’s plans to make the UK an international technology superpower will be welcomed by many in the sector. We look forward to working with the government to ensure that the UK continues to thrive in this crucial area.”
