Wing Expands Drone Fleet to Optimize Larger Deliveries, Says Sundar Pichai

In a recent announcement, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, revealed the company’s strategic expansion in the realm of drone delivery. Pichai expressed Wing’s commitment to constant innovation, stating, “At Wing, we’re always thinking big about how to optimize drone delivery.” The focus of this optimization is on larger orders, and Pichai unveiled an additional aircraft to the Wing fleet designed explicitly for this purpose.

“With over 350,000 Wing deliveries completed to customers’ homes across three continents, we’re learning so much from our partners and the customers who receive our drone deliveries,” Sundar Pichai stated, underlining the wealth of experience that has contributed to Wing’s evolution.

The Sundar Pichai shared insights into order trends, revealing that 70% of all US orders are delivered by one-wing aircraft, while 30% involve two aircraft. To cater to the growing demand for larger orders, Wing will introduce an additional aircraft to complement the existing fleet. Pichai likened this approach to how airlines operate different aircraft for various routes, emphasizing that the new drone would streamline deliveries of bulkier items.

He introduced the concept of an Aircraft Library, where Wing’s team works on various configurations and builds on core components to meet market needs efficiently. This adaptable approach enables Wing to identify specific demands, like the need for a larger aircraft, and swiftly respond to optimize their delivery services.

Describing the new aircraft as the latest example of using the Aircraft Library’s design principles, Pichai highlighted that it would complement Wing’s existing fleet. This additional drone can carry a payload of up to five pounds, maintaining a round-trip range of 12 miles and a cruising speed of approximately 65 miles per hour.

Sundar Pichai stressed that the effectiveness of the aircraft is dependent on the supporting software and logistics networks. Wing is designing the new drone to seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure and automation systems that underpin their current fleet.

With this expansion and adaptation, Wing aims to enhance the convenience of drone delivery, delivering not just packages but an optimized experience for customers with diverse needs.
